Applications of meta-analysis in sociology

The term meta-analysis encompasses a class of statistical techniques which aim at synthesizing published empirical outcomes. In 1976, when Glass coined the term meta-analysis, he was referring to outcome statistics like (standardized) mean differences. Over the last 35 years, the application of and research on meta-analysis has been expanded enormously.

While being a popular approach in medicine, psychology or educational sciences, sociological meta-analyses are still a rare phenomenon. At the Research Institute for Sociology of the University of Cologne, however, some efforts have been made to add meta-analysis to the sociological toolkit. Over the years, several meta-analytical projects have been conducted and their findings were published in Germany and internationally. We also have been actively involved in organizing conferences and workshops.

News

  • 3/2012: In cooperation with GESIS – Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences, Dr. Bernd Weiss and Prof. Dr. Michael Wagner are offering an introductory workshop on meta-analysis in Cologne, Germany, December 13 - 14, 2012. The workshop will be held in German. We are planning to cover not only the usual meta-analysis methods, but also meta-analytical techniques that are appropriate when it comes to outcomes based on non-experimental study designs, e.g. regression results (which is a common outcome type in sociology). We will also have an introduction to individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis. Finally, we will be using (and shortly introducing) the free software package R for all our tasks. More information can be found on the GESIS website.
